for Birla Carbon
Birla Carbon Black
Birla Carbon, part of the Aditya Birla Group, is one of the world’s largest producers of carbon black: the material that gives tires their strength and inks their deep black. With agency LeftChannel I created a series of 3D animations for the brand: a 60-second brand film, short chapter films, a screensaver for in-house displays and animated UI elements for an interactive installation, used online, at events and in customer presentations.
Everything was produced in 4K. I built and rendered the CGI in Cinema 4D with Redshift and Blender, and did the compositing, typography and motion graphics in After Effects. My role covered concept, 3D design, animation, lighting and final delivery.
Interactive experience
The project also included an interactive experience for Birla Carbon’s visitor spaces: a large touch display where visitors explore the company’s values, sustainability projects and industry impact, with 3D motion graphics reacting to every choice. I designed and animated the screens, transitions and idle loops, so the display keeps moving even when nobody is touching it.
Motion Design
The material itself was the creative challenge: carbon black is literally black on black, so lighting, reflections and depth had to do the work that colour normally does. The 3D scenes move from raw particles to finished products in flowing, abstract sequences, while clean typography and 2D motion graphics carry the facts. Films, screensaver and touch screens share one visual language.
